      <image:caption>We’ve been holding the Hop-Up annually for four years, and 2016 was our most diverse celebration of ale yet. We brought beers from around Australia to Sydney’s doorstep, to create the perfect excuse for city workers to knock off on time, for a whole week. As well as the procuring the nation’s best brewers, Time Out curated a pop-up kitchen – with various resident chefs from the Burger Project to the Bavarian – plus live entertainment throughout the week. By slipstreaming into the marketing and PR already created by SCBW – not to mention omnichannel promotion through Time Out’s owned media – we were able to sustain a high turnout throughout the week. To keep talkability up, and make sure we appealed to a diverse audience, we created different activations and events most nights. From tap takeovers to boilermaker sessions, and educational beer banter seminars to live music in the form of battling buskers, the Hop-Up’s line-up of events, entertainment and ales meant there was something to suit all tastes.</image:caption>

Reader nominations (with a push from the venues themselves) informed our choice of city competitors, and helped drive hype and ticket sales early. This resulted in tickets selling soon after announcement. Based on a hugely successful Time Out New York event, The Battle of the Burger event series saw over 250 guests at the Sydney heat, 230 in Melbourne and 160 for the Grand final. To support these events Time Out produced a four month media plan including editorial, advertising and competitions across all of our platforms, with additional promotion from third parties.</image:caption>

Once users had arrived at the .guru site, we asked three simple questions: “What are you into?”; “When are you coming?”; “What’s your budget?”. Their answers feed into the timeout.guru algorithm which presents users with their bespoke itinerary. Better still, we then offered each user the opportunity to win their itinerary – an all-expenses-paid trip to the capital – by simply emailing their itinerary to themselves, from within the site. This competition mechanism provided VisitCanberra with three forms of valuable, actionable user data: Insight into potential visitors’ seasonal preferences, activity choices and budgets Analytics from engagement with the Time Out recommendations (the popularity of specific activities, venues and hotels) First-party declared email addresses for follow-up</image:caption>

The events were well received by the attendees with Sydney’s party offering a festival atmosphere with food trucks, entertainment and an amazing venue in the Powerhouse Museum, with the stage set up underneath the museum’s gigantic moon exhibit. There was a full media campaign in the lead-up to the event centring on the People’s Choice Award, nominee announcements and ticket sales. Time Out, nominated venues and influencer attendees posted Instagram updates throughout the night. Post-event, there was a video of the night and a event gallery posted on FB, and winners shared their glory on their own channels, extending the campaign touch points.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>There were two main drivers for this campaign: Getting readers to engage, post and use Google (the engagement/content piece) Getting readers to vote for their favourite #foundongoogle dish (the engagement/activation piece) The campaign centred around nine hero dishes with Time Out-produced content to drive discoverability and hunger, then integrated these dishes into dedicated Time Out Food Awards categories. Readers were encouraged to vote for their favourite dish, the venues were encouraged to drive their own social campaigns, and then both trade and consumer guests were encouraged to attend the Food Awards to celebrate Signature Searches and venues around town. This was an always-on campaign with content, social, eDM and print activity present throughout the campaign period, complementing Google’s wider in-venue and outdoor campaign. The majority of the media was weighed in the lead-up to the awards themselves. This included two incentivised social campaigns, one to win event tickets, the other to win venue experiences. The CTA to win products and tickets proved a powerful driving force.</image:caption>
