Remixing it up

Once a year team Time Out supercharges its creative battery at Remix Summit, a platform for the collision of ideas between arts, culture, technology and entrepreneurship. That’s a bit of a mouthful, so if it helps any, think about it this way: what Remix helps us understand at a deep level – way better than any analytic software can – where audience is moving and why. After all, as a publisher our job is to engage audience, notwithstanding the diversity of channels they move between.

Speakers included the founder of Santa Fe’s collaborative immersive art/theatre concern Meow Wolf (Time Out rated Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return the fourth best thing to do in the world this year); and the Lowline in NYC, which, when completed will turn a disused underground tram station with the world’s first subterranean garden. They appeared alongside local innovators like Dark Mofo and Google Rare (Google’s diversity and inclusion program).

I also took the main stage and talk about Time Out’s journey from magazine to marketplace (Time Out Market Miami launches May 9!) and the importance of staying true to your mission.

But the contribution we take the most pride in is delivering to Remix each year is the Time Out Coffeehouse, which follows the tradition of the London coffeehouses of the 17th century. Here, educated and open-minded folk would gather to exchange ideas and hear news of the world, free from “bawdy talk” as one would find in the alehouses of the day. Our take on this concept sees devices left at the door, curated guest lists and menu, and inspiring conversations which escalate in volume and insight with each Espresso Martini.

It’s entirely the right environment for a number of our local stakeholders to rub shoulders with Remix Summit’s visiting international keynotes for ideas to be exchanged and for all to be inspired.

The next opportunity to engage with the Remix team will be at Melbourne Museum on May 30-31 during Creative State Summit.
